The Borgata December 17, 2010

My best friend and I needed a girls' getaway. We both have a lot on our plates, so I suggested we take a quick overnight trip to the Borgata in Atlantic City. I must confess, I have wanted to have a girls' trip to the Borgata since I saw the Real Housewives of NJ visit the Water Club (connected to the Borgata) last year. LOL...

But I digress. Back to our story, we booked a Fiore Suite with two queen beds. So glad I booked it over a week in advance, because when I checked the prices the morning of our departure, the price went up by over $150 *gasp*! It pays to book early!

We both got off work early that day. My friend Rae and I live in the same town, so I picked her up and we raced to 295 to beat the traffic. As we headed down the highway, we started thinking about another one of my friends, Janelle. We decided to swing by her home and pick her up too. She couldn't pack quickly enough, lol!!

The drive down was uneventful, besides all the girl talk (tee-hee!). I was pretty surprised that the roads in AC were pretty empty for a Friday night. I guess since it was the weekend before Christmas everyone was home? In any event, we got a little lost trying to get to the Borgata. After 10 minutes of U-turns, we reached the parking deck around 7 PM. I love the simplicity of the parking there, as well as the price (just $5 total).

We walked into the lobby, and again, I was so surprised at how few people there were checking into the hotel. More fun for us! We got our keys and walked into the "Living Room,"  the foyer of the hotel where a security guard stands to check room keys. The Living Room is beautiful, with a huge flower arrangement on an expansive table, a fabulous chandelier, and several couch and loveseat sets for people to gather. It really feels like an elegant living room. Beyond the table and arrangement is the elevator bank. I love the trompe l'oeil paintings on the elevator doors that make them look like they were carved from wood.

I requested a high-floor room with a great view, and we excitedly rode the elevators to the 25th floor. Our suite was beautiful, with a great view of the city. The lights of AC were beautiful when seen from the expansive windows that covered the entire far wall of the room. We had two queen beds, a large flat-screen TV, and a large marble bathroom with a soaking tub, separate W/C, and marble and glass shower with a bench.

I guess we're not as young as we used to be, because we all laid down for a NAP for 2 hours. I couldn't believe it, but the nap was much needed. Well, we didn't really nap, we ended up trying to fall asleep several times but the conversation was so good, we never fell asleep! After those failed attempts, we got dressed to head downstairs for dinner and dancing.

Had a quick dinner at the Metropolitan around 10:30 PM. The menu here is very similar to a diner- breakfast items, sandwiches, soups, salads, and simple desserts. I had a burger with cheddar cheese- dee-lish! Rae had a cheesesteak that was large enough for two, and Janelle had the grilled veggie panini. Everything was hot and delicious. I would recommend this place for a quick, no-frills dinner.

We then walked the casino floor to find a club that was open. We eneded up at Mur Mur around 11:30. The wait appeared to be long, but actually I think we were in line for about 20 minutes. Doesn't look like anyone was turned away, though it was a pretty good-looking, well-put-together crowd. We don't really go to clubs that much (I think this was like my 2nd or 3rd time going to one in my whole life), and I felt very comfortable. Rae and I had husbands at home and just wanted to dance, so this place was perfect for us!

The mix of music there was great. We danced the entire night. One hilarious moment- a girl there (about 22 years old) was celebrating her birthday. She had a cute dress on and a birthday crown, and had a VIP section all to herself and her friends. We were standing right next to her VIP area, and I guess she thought we looked like we were having tons of fun. I also think she had a bit too much to drink. So anyway, she and her friend (I'm guessing she was her designated driver) came over to us and started dancing. A few seconds later, she asked us if we wanted to come into her VIP area.....well, sure!! A couple seconds after that, she motioned to us, asking if we wanted something to drink. We thought she had to be kidding, so we were like, sure, whatever. She comes back with three heavy glasses of something brown on ice...don't know what it was, but we took them and said thank you....and never took a sip, lol! It was pretty cool to be in the less crowded area of the VIP section for a while.

As for the rest of the night, we danced until about 3:30. My feet were killing me! I had to sit at one of the casino slot machines for a couple minutes to relieve my feet for a few minutes. We saw the 'birthday girl' one more time with her great friend dutifully watching her to make sure she was ok. I gritted my teeth and made the walk back to our room, where we all collapsed around 4:30 AM.

We woke up around 8:30 and Rae and I went to the Metropolitan once more for breakfast. We were looking forward to the buffet and were sad to discover that it was closed for the next week, for cleaning! So we opted to revisit the Metro.

Janelle headed straight for the incredible pool area for a quick swim.We were exhausted and STARVING, so we each ordered a huge stack of pancakes, eggs, sausage, coffee, and juices. The waiter warned us that the pancakes were very large and asked us if we were sure we each wanted our own stack. I laughed and said, "We are HUNGRY, so bring em on out." He wasn't kidding- they were each about 1/2 inch thick, and covered most of the surface of our plates. They had a rich, malted flavor and the butter sank into them perfectly. Delicious! Everything was great. The service was pretty slow so if you're in a hurry, this is not the spot. If you want a leisurely breakfast, this is a nice place. I'm pretty sure the waiters were trying to keep up with the pace since most people came here because the buffet was closed.

Checkout was easy, and we were on our way home after paying our $5 for parking. I wish we could have stayed the whole weekend. We'll have to do that next time, perhaps during the summer! ;)
